Iceland Trip Day 5 – Perlan and Saga Museum (Reykjarvik)

So after a great nights sleep (the girls were all sleeping by ten) we set off for Perlan, another of Reykjavik’s prominent attractions. The weather was looking changeable and the snow and ice on the pavements was even more treacherous as it started to turn to slush in the bitter rain that was falling intermittently.

We made out way to the Perlan via the bus station, where a fight between some locals, necessitating the attendance of the Police and an Ambulance attending, kept us entertained.

The wind was gaining strength as we climed the path from the bus stop to the Perlan, which is situated on the top of ridge.

we stopped briefly for some piccies, yes Sabs and Catt were freezing to death so they went strait inside missing the statue of a band …

Donna and I soon followed them in and we made our way up to the restaurant for a coffee … but we left the girls to fend for themselves and went strait out on the observation deck that surrounds the glass done …

The view was incredible with a complete rainbow highlighted by a darkening, threatening sky …

You really dont get an impression of the strength of the wind, driving what had now turned to rain, into our faces … we tried to get back into the restaurant using the door we had come out of but it had been locked … we had to fight our way around the other side, with Donna nearly getting blown off the platform at times.

I think we had earned our coffee today! …

… and some lunch.

Then wrote our Post Cards like the good travelers we are ;)

Then it was off to the Saga Museum on the grown floor level of the Perlan, located in one of the Steel Cylinders, that make up its base.

The Saga Museum tells the history of Iceland using life-like figures in lovingly created scenes … the audio commentary, delivered by individual headset players is informative and at times (I think intentionally) amusing, though I wish Id asked how to pause it as the delivery of information is relentless … giving little time for it to sink in or move to the next display …

… as we were the only people in the museum we did find time to muck about a little as we went around ;)

Then we found the bit at the end of the tour just before the gift shop … Its a great way to spend some time learning about Iceland’s history … and the figures are fantastic as is the “Making Of …” documentary screened by the gift shop 8)

After a little retail therapy in the Discount Shoe Shop temporarily sited next to the museum we returned to the apartment to chill and get ready for the main event of the day …
